Getting Started & Readiness

Do I need to decide right away?

No. Many families simply review pricing first. If it helps, the Welcome Kit allows you to begin gently while deciding details later.

What does “starting” actually mean?

Starting usually means requesting a Welcome Kit. The kit provides information and secure materials so you can proceed only if and when you’re ready.

Receiving a kit does not commit you to anything.

Who is a memorial diamond right for?

Memorial diamonds are chosen by families seeking a lasting, personal way to remember a loved one or pet.

Some feel drawn to this option immediately, while others consider it later. Both paths are completely valid.

What if I’m not emotionally ready yet?

That’s completely normal. Grief has no timeline.

This process is designed to respect your pace, whether that means learning now or returning later.

Ashes, Respect & Care

What kind of metals do you offer for the jewelry settings?

All our jewelry settings are crafted from 14k Yellow, White, and Rose Gold.

Can you add the diamond to my jewelry if I send it to you?

Unfortunately, we can’t do that because there are too many things to think about to make sure it looks perfect. We only add diamonds to the jewelry we offer on our website or to custom-designed jewelry we create with you. But you can buy diamonds from us and then have them added to your jewelry by a jeweler near you or another company if you want.

What if I can’t choose the setting right now?

If you’re uncertain about the setting, selecting the perfect jewelry piece can be one of the final steps in the process. Most of our clients take several months to make their decision or to change their minds about the type of jewelry they want to craft, allowing ample time to ensure their choice is exactly what they envision.

Are ashes ever mixed with those of another person or pet?

No. Ashes are handled individually at every stage. They are never mixed or shared under any circumstances.

What happens to the remaining ashes?

All ashes not required for diamond creation remain with your family. Only the necessary amount is used for the process.

Can I pause or stop the process after starting?

Yes. You may pause or stop the process before diamond growth begins.

We understand that circumstances and feelings can change.

Five years later, my heart still trembled, just as it did when I saw Rocky for the first time and I knew I had made the right choice. He may be gone, but I can continue to take him with me everywhere I go. Thank you, Saint Diamonds. Thank you for giving me closure and hope.” – Amy

The Process & Timeline

How do I safely ship cremation ashes for a diamond?

We recommend ordering our Submission Kit, which is a very useful tool for the carbon submission process. If you need any assistance with sending the kit back to us, please don’t hesitate to contact our customer service team for help.

How much hair or ashes is required? Can I combine hair and ashes to make a memorial diamond?

We need about eight tablespoons of ash or half a cup of hair to create a diamond. We accept several sources for the required carbon (for example, 50% of hair and the rest in ashes). Pet ashes and fur are very similar to human ashes and hair at the chemical level. Therefore, we need the same amount in each case. You can safely combine the ashes of two loved ones. Please be aware, that the creation of a memorial diamond from two or more sources will incur an additional cost, for example, hair + ashes, if you are combining hair + hair or ashes + ashes there will be no additional fee for that.

Why do you need more ashes than hair for a diamond?

Hair contains approximately 45-50% carbon, whereas ashes typically contain only about 1-5% carbon. Despite being more carbon-rich, it’s challenging to determine the precise amount of hair needed due to variations in texture and density among individuals. In contrast, we can correlate the necessary weight of ashes in grams to tablespoons. For hair, however, precise measurement by weight in grams is required to ensure the proper amount is submitted.

Is there carbon left in ashes after cremation?

Certainly! After cremation, what remains are mostly minerals, primarily calcium and phosphorus. However, carbon is also present in the form of residual organic matter. While a significant portion of the carbon is typically oxidized during the cremation process, a small percentage remains in the form of charred fragments. These charred remnants contribute to the overall carbon content found in cremated ashes. Ashes contain 1-5% carbon depending on the age of the loved one, their diet and other factors.

Does the amount of ashes determine diamond size?

No, it doesn’t. From just 1/2 a cup of ashes or hair, we can extract several grams of carbon, but only one gram is needed to grow a diamond.

Do I need to wash or clean the hair prior to shipping?

No, there is no need to wash or clean the hair before sending it to us. We will handle the cleaning and sterilization process in our laboratory

Can you make a diamond with a small amount of ashes?

Yes, you may provide less ashes. We can always work around this requirement with you to reach a solution that suits your family. You can also decide to send us only a portion of the remains for your own reasons. If you do not have enough remains (ashes or hair) to cover the necessary amounts for production, members of your family can supply us with the hairs we will need.

Can you turn aquamation ashes into diamonds?

Yes! Aquamated ashes can have slightly different composition compared to ashes from traditional cremation but they still contain carbon that can be used in the creation of memorial diamonds.

What happens to leftover ashes after a diamond is made?

Saint Diamonds carefully purifies and processes all the remains (hair or ashes) we receive during the first stages of the cremation diamond production. The needed the carbon resulting from that purification process, which is then transformed into a real diamond. If we have any remaining carbon, which is in a graphite powder form, we’ll keep it at our laboratory for security measures. We cremate the remaining carbon in a miniature furnace.

Do ashes or hair expire? Can you make a diamond with the remains of someone who passed a long time ago?

The carbon within hair and ashes does not expire. As long as we receive the appropriate amount of ashes or hair, we can create a memorial diamond regardless of when the individual passed away.

Can you make a diamond from a living person's hair?

We are delighted to create a diamond to commemorate the special bond between you and your partner, pet, family members, or even all of the above. Many of our clients have submitted hair for creating meaningful diamonds to be used in wedding ceremonies and anniversaries.

Besides ashes, what alternative carbon sources can I provide? Can diamonds be made from hair and teeth?

Any materials containing carbon can be used to create diamonds. You have the option to combine different carbon sources, such as ashes and hair, or include multiple individuals or pets within one source category, like hair from an entire family, including your pet. You have the option to choose what you’d like to use for growing your diamond, not limited to just ashes or hair. The base material can be 1/2 cup in volume, which can be various items. You may use pieces of a T-shirt, blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, dried flowers, a handwritten note on cardstock, and even a lock of your own hair or a combination of family members’ hair. However, please be aware that there will be a surcharge for submitting various types of carbon sources, as this involves additional steps in our laboratory process.

Can I send both human ashes and pet ashes to make one diamond?

Yes, you safely mix the ashes.

Will I be updated at each stage of the process?

We do notify our customers about the process stages which also include photos. We know that turning ashes into diamonds is a big decision and how important it is to know what and when is happening.
